Considering the benchmarks/standards that you are required to teach what science concept or content will you plan to teach:

Grade 6 Nature of Energy  * Explain that the energy found in nonrenewable resources such as fossil fuels (e.g., oil, coal and natural gas) originally came from the sun and may renew slowly over millions of years.  * Describe how electric energy can be produced from a variety of sources (e.g., sun, wind and coal).  * Describe how renewable and nonrenewable energy resources can be managed (e.g., fossil fuels, trees and water).

[edit] Ways to incorporate different teaching methods

  • Lecture
Build Background:1) Ask your students how they arrived at school today. Did they take a bus? A car? Did they walk? Ask students what makes a car run. What fuel does it require?) Ask students if they can tell you from where gasoline comes? What is it? (Gasoline is a product of petroleum, or oil. It is a refined by-product of the crude oil that comes from the ground.) 2) Ask students to brainstorm other ways human beings utilize oil. Aside from fueling our cars, how else do we put petroleum to use? (Write student answers on the chalkboard or whiteboard.) 3)Ask students how long they think humans have been putting oil to use. Were people using oil before the invention of cars? If so, how? 4) Display products made from oil and ask students to list the products that they believe were made from oil. 5) Explain to your students that in this lesson, you will be examining the history of oil, formation of natural gas and oil, production, refining, and the different uses human beings have had for it over the centuries. 6) Summarize the lessons that will be covered in the next two weeks. 7) Go over indicators that will be covered.

The students will read the following webpage. http://www.fe.doe.gov/education/energylessons/oil/MS_Oil_Studyguide.pdf The web page is divided into the following parts. Students will be divided into seven groups. Each group will be given a topic. Students will be given a graphic organizer “main idea and details” The students will complete their section and than are responsible to teach the other group members what they learned. Oil Part 1: Looking Down an Oil Well Part 2: Squeezing Oil Out of the Earth Part 3: Washing More Oil From Rocks Part 4: Soap, Bugs and Other Ways to Produce Oil Natural Gas Part 1: Fueling the Blue Flame Part 2: The History of Natural Gas Part 3: Getting Gas from the Ground...and the Sea The Energist; Getting to Know Oil and The Energist: Getting to Know Natural Gas can be used in place of the webpage. This was published by The National Energy Foundation. It was located in our blue binder. Vocabulary will also be introduced at this point. I will use the vocabulary reading we did in class to show the students the importance of understanding the vocabulary.   • Practice by Doing
I will use the book Roadmap of Natural Gas and Oil that we received at the workshop. The students will be divided into the following groups. 1.Formation of Natural gas and oil. 2.Migration and Trapping of Natural Gas and Oil 3.Exploring for Natural Gas and Oil 4.Drilling and Production of Natural Oil and Gas 5.Refining of Natural Gas and Oil 6.Products from natural Gas and Oil Each group is responsible for: 1. Power Point Presentation: Create a short power point that bullets at least 5 important facts about their topic. 2. Lab: Choose one lab from their topic to complete in front of class. Students will be able to explain how your experiment demonstrates your topic. 3. Graphic Organizer: Groups will create the graphic organizer that corresponds with their topic. Directions are in the roadmap book. Groups will have the class create their graphic organizer. 4. Class collage: Each group will help create a Career Connection Collage. They will research to find out what a person does with the career they have been given. They will type out how the career relates to the oil and gas industry. They will include pictures and add their information to the class collage.
  • Teach Others/Immediate Use of Learning
Students will explain their completed projects to the 5th graders. Our school holds a Celebration of Education in March. This is a day where the students can showcase their activities to the community. This would be a great opportunity for the students to explain their projects.
  • Use of Technology
After completion of energy unit students will download a Sim City game that partnered with BP. The students will make choices in powering their city? It also shows how BP Alternative Energy is making choices about low-carbon energy at bpsimcitysocieties.com/ -It's a Gas! This site describes how gas is located and obtained, what a petroleum engineer does, and safety issues. There are several classroom activities to help students understand the concepts of pressure, density, and "traps." http://www.pge.com/microsite/pge_dgz/gas/activity.html
  • Use of 21st Century Skills
Students will examine a timeline at http://www.eia.doe.gov/kids/history/timelines/petroleum.html. In addition, students will bring in a current event article pertaining to oil and gas. They will present their article to the class. We will discuss articles.

[edit] Ways to incorporate graphic organizers

1) Teach vocabulary using the "fly swat" game. Divide your class into 2 groups. Display on the whiteboard vocabulary words. Choose one student from each team and ask them to turn their backs to the words. Give both students a fly swatter. The teacher gives a definition for one of the words. The students will face the words and attempt to be the first to "fly swat" the word to earn points for their team, 2) Create a Pop-up book. Follow the directions from the following website: http://library.thinkquest.org/J001156/makingbooks/pulltab/index.htm. This can be a vocabulary book that the students can organize the definitions and information about oil and gas. 3) Create games using this Powerpoint template: http://jc-schools.net/tutorials/vocab/ppt-vocab.html.
