Consider energy education and your curriculum. How can you incorporate what you have learned into your science curriculum? Brainstorm some ideas that would include a science concept that needs to be taught, a variety of teaching methods to address retention, and the use of graphic organizers.

[edit] Benchmarks, Standards, Content or Concepts

Explore Earth's Systems and Geochemical Cycles
  • Explore movement of matter between reservoirs
  • Understand geological formations
  • Conduct scientific investigations
  • Understand that technology helps solve human problems

[edit] Ways to incorporate different teaching methods

  • Lecture
Students would take notes from the Power Point (shown at workshop) with History,Background, OH Firsts, Basic Oil & Gas 101.
  • Audio-visual
Students would watch videos from "The Roadmap of Natural Gas and Oil" and complete Graphic Organizer with all 6 parts.  Fold paper in half, cut six equal sections and label 1-6(formation, migration, exploring, drilling, refining, products), vocab, and drawings.
  • Practice by Doing
Students would receive  a modified "Job Descriptions For Peer Learning".  Teacher would have 6 tables set up like the workshop.  In groups of four, teams would explore the information at their station, practice the demo, and guide the class in setting up an experiment.  They would also decide what type of graphic organizer should be used when they share with the class.  This would take several days to complete.
  • Teach Others/Immediate Use of Learning
Each group would become the experts as they lead the rest of the class through the demo, lab set up, and graphic organizer.  Students may use computers, airliner, or posters throughout the lessons.
  • Use of Technology
Students would read http://rebar.ecn.purdue.edu/ect/Mechanical/smartpigs.aspx and come up with some situations where this technology could be used in other areas. They could then design more “smart pigs” to perform other tasks as well.
  • Use of 21st Century Skills
Students would create a power point presentation from their area of expertise.  The new information could be used to compile a Jeopardy Game.
