Identify that science and technology are essential social enterprises but alone they can only indicate what can happen, not what should happen. Realize the latter involves human decisions about the use of knowledge. Explain how science often advances with the introduction of new technologies and how solving technological problems often results in new scientific knowledge. Explore and explain any given technology that may have a different value for different groups of people and at different points in time. Predict how decisions regarding the implementation of technologies involve the weighing of trade-offs between predicted positive and negative effects on the environment and/or humans. Investigate that all fuels (e.g., fossil, solar and nuclear) have advantages and disadvantages; therefore society must consider the trade-offs among them (e.g., economic costs and environmental impact). Research sources of energy beyond traditional fuels and the advantages, disadvantages and trade-offs society must consider when using alternative sources (e.g., biomass, solar, hybrid engines, wind and fuel cells).
[edit] Essential Question
How are plastics recycled?
[edit] Background
Students will go to their school computer folder and under Environmental Science they are to open up the Recycling Plastics power point template. Students will research using the internet on how to recycle a type of plastic. The type of plastic will be determined by the following information.
Letter of First Name -- Recycling Symbol # -- Type of Plastic
ABC-- 1 -- Polyethylene TerephtalateDEF -- 2 -- High Density PolyethyleneGHI -- 3 -- VinylJKLM -- 4 -- Low Density PolyethyleneNOPQ -- 5 -- PolypropyleneRSTU -- 6 -- PolystyreneVWXYZ -- 7 -- Other PolymersThe power point that they will complete will be as follows.Slide 1 Plastic Type Name: Plastic code # : Plastic abbreviationSlide 2 Sample of uses of that type of plastic.Slide 3 What products are made from when the plastic are recycled.Slide 4 What is the energy savings when this Plastic is recycled?Slide 5 Where can this be recycled?Slide 6 Other information. After each student's power point is completed they will collaborate with the other students in the class with the same type of plastic and they will develop one power point for a class presentation. This combined power point will be printed with a note page so students can take down information as they see the presentations. Each group will present their power point. Each student will need to find three examples of their assigned plastic at home and/or around school and bring it in for their presentation.[edit] Ways to incorporate different teaching methods
- Lecture
Students will get an introduction to the waste chapter.
- Reading
Students will read the online book and do research on their topic using the internet.
- Audio-visual
Students will give their presentations using projectors and Power points. Students will be encouraged to incorporate pictures into the presentations.
- Demonstration
Students will demonstrate the plastic they have found in their everyday lives.
- Discussion Group
Students will have discussions regarding their group power point. They will express their ideas on the best way to present the information.
- Practice by Doing
Students will be able to recycle many types of plastics as result of the completion of this project.
- Teach Others/Immediate Use of Learning
Students will be teaching class mates about their type of plastic using reading , audio-visual, and demonstration.
- Use of Technology
Students use the power point, computer, internet and projectors.[edit] Graphic Organizers
The Power Point notes sheet will act as the graphic organizer. Each group lectures will be put on one sheet and organized by the plastic types number. This will develop a plastic recycling guide.
[edit] Use of 21st Century Skills
Inventory a Dumpster: Students can inventory a dumpster and determine what types of plastics are in the dumpster and approximant amounts. From their graphic organizers they can determine the energy saving of recycling these materials compared with replacing them with new material.
The Business model: Students can pick an industry and determine 1. How have they reduced their plastic waste? 2. How are they using recycled plastics? 3. How the students would suggest reducing or recycling plastics in this industry.[edit] Field Trips or Speakers
In Medina County all garbage that is collected is taken to a centralized recycling center. There the garbage is sorted and those items that can be recycled will be recycled. This is partly funded by selling of the recycled materials . The facility is very willing to receive groups on field trips.
[edit] Performance task that reflects on essential question
Students are to make a list of items on how plastic recycling is affecting their life.
