[edit] Benchmarks, Standards, Content or Concepts

Earth Science: Students will be able to explain how the supply of non-renewable resources is limited and can be extended by recycling. Science and Technology: Students will be able to explain decisions about the use of certain products can result in desirable and undesirable consequences (e.g., social and environmental).

[edit] Essential Question

How does recycling plastic save energy and resources?

[edit] Ways to incorporate different teaching methods

  • Introduction Demonstration br />
Before Students enter room place everyday plastic products all around the classroom: toys, cell phones, water bottle, pop bottles, milk jugs, bags (grocery, lunch, sandwich), report covers, etc. Write on the board the following questions: What do all the items have in common? How are the items in the room made? Can they be reused or recycled? Give the students time to discuss with their science group their ideas.
  • Audio-visual
After a brief discussion the students will visit two different website to get a better understanding of Plastic. Highlights For Kids: How Is Plastic Made? : http://www.highlightskids.com/Science/ScienceQuestions/h1sciQmakingPlastic.asp Energy Kids: Petroleum:http://www.eia.gov/kids/energy.cfm?page=oil_home-basics
  • Practice by doing
After visiting the website the students will work with their science groups to answer the previous questions. The whole class will then discuss each group answers to the questions. At Home Challenge: Students will research How Ohio’s Fossil Fuels are linked to Oil and Plastic. Ideas to consider: How oil is formed, Length of time required to form oil, Where do we get our Oil, How people use oil, and How oil is being conserved. Students will search at home for 3-5 different plastic items to bring back to school.
  • Teach Others/Immediate Use of Learning
Students will share with their groups their plastic items and what they learned about Fossil Fuel, Oil and Plastic. Science Groups will organize their plastic items to determine it they can be reused or recycled. Each Group will create a Power Point presentation or a Map (See Below)

[edit] 21st Century Skills

Students will use computer skills to create a power point presentation on what they learned.

[edit] Graphic Organizers

Students can create maps following the path of Ohio Oil from the earth to the product.

[edit] Field Trips or Speakers

Schedule a representative from a recycling company and/or an Ohio Oil & Gas Energy consultant to present to the school.

[edit] Performance task that reflects on essential question

Students will have the option to form a Recycling Committee for the School. Students will teach other grade levels the importance of not only recycling at school but also at home. The Recycling Committee will create flyers, commercials and public service announcements for the school.
