[edit] Benchmarks, Standards, Content or Concepts

In environmental science, we study the geology of the earth and renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. This will be aligned with the standards of investigating fuels and their advantages and disadvantages and explaining new technological advances and the effects on the environment.

[edit] Essential Question

How is petroleum produced, extracted, and used?

[edit] Ways to incorporate different teaching methods

  • Lecture
Non renewable energy: Petroleum I will explain where petroleum comes from how and how it was created. I will explain how petroleum is extracted from the earth. I will explain what materials are created from petroleum. I will review nonrenewable energy versus renewable energy.
  • Reading
Students will read the chapter on petroleum in our text for background information. Students will then research drilling for crude oil (oogeep.org and howstuffworks.com) and write a summary on the process.
  • Audio-visual
Students will watch videos from wiki on the six steps to obtain oil and natural gas.
  • Demonstration
Teacher will demonstrate the drilling and production of natural gas and oil process using the Drilling and Production experiment number 4 in the OOGEEP lab book.
  • Discussion
In small groups, students will discuss the pros and cons of using fossil fuel such as oil completing a t chart graphic organizer to organize their thoughts.
  • Practice by doing
Students will get into groups of three or four . They will complete the refining of natural gas and oil experiment number 5 from OOGEEP lab book. The" Chemistry of Distillation" will allow students to visualize the process of separating crude oil.
  • Teach Others/Immediate Use of learning
Each student in my class will pair with another student during the same period Environment Science class across the hall and explain the benefits of using oil and the process of obtaining it. As a pair, they will create a graphic organizer such as a Venn diagram, t chart, or graph to demonstrate what they have discussed.

[edit] Use of 21st Century Skills

We will use the computer and internet to research information on the formation and current drilling and production of natural gas and oil techniques.

[edit] Graphic Organizers

As mentioned previously the students will complete a t-chart during their discussion group and create a graphic organizer of their choice during their peer teaching activity.

[edit] Field Trips or Speakers

I will contact the OOGEEP to send a guest speaker out to talk to my environmental science class. I will also contact the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to request a guest speaker and any other resources they will provide in the study of fossil fuel exploration and use. Unfortunately, our field trip fund is extremely limited.

[edit] Performance task that reflects on the essential question

At the end of the series of lessons, students will create a powerpoint including the layers of the earth, the rock layers of the crust, pointing out were fossil fuels will be found, and a brief explanation of oil drilling and extraction.
