Students will become better stewards of our natural resources by learning when it is appropriate to recycle, reduce, reuse, compost, burn, or bury.

Guest Speaker: Henry County Litter Control – Gary Stein - Mr. Stein will explain the number code for recycling plastic containers.
Overview: Students will learn the plastic recycling code. Plastic Recycling Code Chart found at oogeep.org, oogeep wiki, lesson 6 products. Students will learn what plastics can be recycled and what cannot be recycled.[edit] Lesson 2
Field Trip: Henry County Landfill Students will visit our local landfill to see what our landfill does with old tires, concrete, and other wastes. Students will also learn to differentiate between what we need to recycle and what needs to be put In a landfill.
Overview: Students will learn what services their local municipal landfill provides for their local communities. Students will learn what materials do or do not go into a landfill.[edit] Lesson 3
Field Trip: City of Napoleon Yard Waste Site
Overview: Students will learn how biodegradable plant materials (grass clippings, leaves, wood chips, discarded limbs) can be utilized to make a usable mulch for future gardens.[edit] Lesson 4
One Month Classroom Trash Observation - For two weeks students will weight the trash before it is placed in the dumpster. The following two weeks students will recycle biodegradable materials. Examples: -Desirable paper is placed into a container to be shredded for homemade paper or compost. -Wood shavings from pencil sharpeners be placed in classroom composter. NOTE: The only thing to be placed in the trash would be items that are undesirable to be recycled.
Overview: Students will develop judgment skills on what should be thrown away or recycled. Students will learn how to make home made paper from paper scraps. Students will learn how to make their own compost pit or com poster.[edit] Lesson 5
Construct a Portable Landfill - Students will construct a landfill made out of 100 gallon plastic water tank. It will be placed on a small trailer for future transports to other schools or interested groups.
Students will understand that modern LANDFILLS are carefully engineered. Students will understand that landfills have layers. Students will understand that landfills are designed to protect GROUNDWATER. Students will understand that landfills are covered everyday to help protect the ENVIRONMENT Students will understand that ORGANIC material does not DECOMPOSE in a modern landfill.Build a portable landfill: http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/green-science/landfill6.htm Materials needed: 100 gallon plastic water tank, PVC pipe, plastic liner, landscaping cloth, pea gravel, leach ate collector container, beach ball balloon, clay, and water.
