How I used these materials/Grade 6 Science Lesson
From OOGEEP
Submitted by Kathy Nerny, Johnstown Monroe Schools
Consider energy education and your curriculum. How can you incorporate what you have learned into your science curriculum? Brainstorm some ideas that would include a science concept that needs to be taught, a variety of teaching methods to address retention, and the use of graphic organizers.

Grade 6 Nature of Energy: I will explain that the sun is the source of energy for nonrenewable resources such as fossil fuels (e.g., oil, coal, and natural gas). These resources may renew over millions of years. I will describe how renewable and nonrenewable resources can be used in our area and around us (e.g. fossil fuels, trees, and water).
[edit] Ways to incorporate different teaching methods
- Lecture
1) Mrs. Fleming and I will share our experience of the workshop. Then I would ask them how many different forms of transportation are there in our area or the different things that we enjoy riding on (car, trucks, buses, four wheelers, tractors, combines, motorcycles etc.). Then I would ask if they know what kind of fuel these vehicles need to run on. Then I would ask the students if they know where gasoline comes from regular or diesel fuel. (Gasoline is a product of petroleum, or oil. It is refined by product of crude oil that comes from the ground). 2). Next, I would ask the students if they know how else we may use oil besides fuel. As the students tell me I would write them on the smart board. 3). Then I would show the student the lip balm and the M&M’s. I then would pass around the sheet from our resources that shows makeup, clothes and other products and put these on the smart board as well as pass around the sheet from our workshop book. 4). I will then tell the students that we will be discussing the history of oil, formation of natural gas and oil, production, refining, and the different uses human beings have had for it over the centuries. 5) Next, I would summarize the lessons that will be covered in the next two weeks. 6) I will go over the indicators that will be covered.
- Reading
I will take the two 2009 National Energy Foundation Newspapers. I will cut out and laminate an article for each group. All of the students will make a graphic organizer so they can take notes from each groups presentation. The students will be divided into groups with four students in each group. Each group will read the article and then teach the other students about the article and what they learned from the article. Vocabulary will also be introduced at this point. I will use the vocabulary reading that we did in class to show the students the importance of understanding the vocabulary.
- Audio-visual
I would show the video clips from our workshop on each of the 6 areas formation, migration & trapping, exploring, drilling & production, refining, and products.
- Demonstrations
I will use the book Roadmap of Natural Gas and Oil that we received at the workshop. The students will be divided into the following groups: 1. Formation of Natural Gas and Oil. 2. Migration and Trapping of Natural Gas and Oil. 3. Exploring for Natural Gas and Oil. 4. Drilling and Production of Natural Oil and Gas. 5. Refining of Natural Gas and Oil. 6. Products from Natural Gas and Oil. I will put the facts for each one of these topics from our book and laminate them into a folder verse a large poster.
- Practice by Doing
The groups will use the lab equipment that we received from our workshop to help them teach the other groups about their topics.
- Use of Technology
The students will use the net books to look up articles on Natural gas & Oil. Then they will share what they learned to the rest of the class. They may use a power point or the smart board to explain what they have learned.
- 21st Century Skills
Share with the students using the smart board the information that we received on each site of our field trip. Discuss with the students that the first oil well was digging to find salt with large logs and rope. Then go on to discuss how oil wells had to be hand started and then advanced to be set on timers etc.
[edit] Graphic Organizers
I would have the students use graphic organizer for their vocabulary words and also as each group was presenting their lab to the rest of the class. These would help the students learn their vocabulary words and take notes for a better understanding of each concept as it is presented.
[edit] Field trips or Speakers
I would invite Rhonda Reda, Executive Director of OOGEEP into the classroom.
