Hastings seventh-grader Lindsey Spangler has learned the importance of giving and getting involved. Spangler is in the process of organizing a school food drive that will take place in February. She said she chose to take on the project as part of her work to earn a Girl Scout Silver Award.

Because the holidays is a common time for a food drive, Spangler said she made sure to chose February to host the drive so Hastings can help Mid-Ohio Food Bank replenish after its busiest season on the year.

As part of Troop 1930 and a Hastings student, Spangler said she has developed a passion for helping other children.

"I think (service learning) has helped me to not take what you have for granted," Spangler said. Read the details here: http://www.snponline.com/articles/2011/12/06/upper_arlington_news/schools/uahastings_20111121_1258pm_2.txt

Congratulations to the Hastings Team who presented at the National Middle School Conference in Louisville. In November 2011, Robb Gonda, Catherine Shapiro, Jessie Zimpher and Leslie Wilson presented a workshop called: Service learning that promotes 21st Century Skills.

The Veteran's Day program was a great success. Students led the program with speeches, performances and skits. Two advisories are continuing the spirit of Vet's Day by forming a Veteran's Garden here at HMS.

6 Gold house helped out with the UA Department of Parks and Forestry. They helped plant trees along Mountview Rd and lay mulch at the fitness stations located at Thompson Park. A great yearly collaboration with the city and a great continuation of HOP day!
