[edit] 8th grade

200+ 8th graders and their teachers collected and boxed personal items, snack, magazines, and notes of appreciation in 61 support our troops boxes to send to a unit in Afghanistan. Students addressed, labeled, and weighed the boxes. Eight students also traveled by van to the Arlington post office to mail the boxes. Both 8th grade teams are in the process of writing Christmas postcards to our list of over 200 veterans. [Support Our Troops Service-learning Mini-grant]

The Veterans' Day Luncheon has been an ongoing project to honor our country's veterans and provide a venue for personal contact with all of our 8th grade students. This event allows students to learn from veterans first hand the importance of history and serving our country. 80-100 veterans and 200 students attended this luncheon.

We received a grant from Service Learning for materials. Then we prepared 36 no sew fleece blankets. We walked down the street to First Community Village for three visits with the Residents of the Alzheimer's Unit and completed the blankets with them while we chatted. The residents got to keep the blankets. We will be visiting them again this winter and they have agreed to help us make blankets for the Kids Helping Kids Program. [edit] Exploratory Arts (PE/Health)

8th graders, Robin Miller - A few seniors are coming to teach and play euchre with our 8th graders to help them not only learn the game of euchre, but also to work on social health. Many students do not interact with adults, or even their peers using conversation, it is a lot of texting. Social skills have gone to the wayside. Playing cards is a good, easy way to get into conversation with others, without the need to be talking the whole time. Cards can be played with people of all different age ranges and can be used for a lifetime.

6th grade, Robin Miller - first quarter a few students chose to run for a cause. We raised money for Children's Hospital with our 5 K run.
