Wickliffe
From UA Service Learning
Barb McCombs’ class: Students visited Sunrise Senior Living in October. The third and fourth grade class wrote and performed poems for the residents and then turned the poems into door decorations for the residents to keep. The class played Bingo with the residents, helping the residents move their makers or find the Bingo numbers as needed. The students did a great job interacting with the residents and gave them hugs on the way out. The class plans to return in the winter to participate in a Valentines Day activity with the residents.
Barb Niemeyer’s class: First and second grade students in Barb Niemeyer's class studied Ohio animals this fall. They learned the importance of protecting the outdoor space around Wickliffe in order to preserve animal habitats. After visiting Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park, learning about animals in class, and reading books about animals, students decided to make bird feeders and toad abodes to hep Ohio animals. Students researched online and in books to learn how to make bird feeders and toad abodes. Using pinecones, peanut butter, and bird seed for the feeders and clay pots for the abodes, students placed the items around the school for animals to enjoy.
Susie Nybell’s class: Susie Nybell's class recently started studying malaria and its effects on people around the world. Her students are trying to raise awareness and money to help those affected by malaria. In lieu of receiving one of their holiday presents, Susie's third graders are asking fellow Wickliffe students to donate $10 to purchase a mosquito net.
Sarah Oberlin’s class: Third and fourth grade students in Sarah Oberlin’s class completed a brainstorming activity about ways to make the community (both locally and globally) a better place. After discussing different types of communities and these communities' possible needs, students completed the sentence, "Imagine a world..." A couple examples of sentences students created include, "Imagine a world where everyone has shelter and food. Imagine a world with lots of friends." These individual sentences combined to make a class poem. The class plans to revisit their poem to find inspiration for opportunities for service-learning.
Sabrina Walters’ class: Sabrina Walters' first and second grade class organized the First Annual Halloween Costume Swap. Through announcements, posters, and take-home notes, Sabrina's students used their writing skills to create advertisements encouraging fellow Wickliffe students to bring in old Halloween costumes to trade or donate. Students in Sabrina's class measured the costumes to figure out the size and labeled each costume with its size, color, and description. The first and second graders helped fellow Wickliffe students pick out costumes to trade during recess.
